On 08 January 2016, H.E Ambassador Suraya Dalil, Permanent Representative of the Government of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva met Mr. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, High Commissioner for Human Rights in his office at Palais Wilson in Geneva.
Ambassador Dalil, while applauding the work of Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights stated that despite numerous challenges, the Government of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has prioritized the goal of strengthening the democratic institutions and stands committed to promoting and protecting the human rights of its citizens in particular women and children. This commitment is evident in the number of recommendations the Government of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan accepted in the 2nd cycle of the Universal Periodic Review. Ambassador Dalil added that Afghanistan presented its report on the general situation of human rights in January 2014, and since then, the Government of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan had not spared any effort to implement the UPR recommendations. Very importantly, there is a strong political commitment from the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to promote and protect the human rights of its citizens.
Furthermore, Ambassador Dalil acknowledged the UPR Trust Fund and added that Afghanistan Ministry of Justice with the support of UNDP established the Human Rights Support Unit. The Unit has the responsibility to review and update on the implement the recommendations received in the 2nd cycle of the UPR.
Mr. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, High Commissioner for Human Rights thanked Ambassador Dalil for her visit and recognizing the work of the United Nations in Afghanistan. He mentioned that since his appointment as High Commissioner for Human Rights it is his first meeting with a high level representative from Afghanistan. High Commissioner further added that we are pleased to have a strong presence in Afghanistan. We applaud the positive steps already taken for the improvement of the human rights in the country and we continue to support all the efforts to protect civilian causalities and ensure accountability.
Ambassador Dalil while thanking the High Commissioner for the meeting assured him that the Government of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and its Permanent Mission in Geneva will continue to give high priority to human rights and other mechanisms for the promotions and protection of human rights in Afghanistan.
